The Deets On Vit D!

Did you know that vitamin D is actually something known as a prohormone?Prohormones are substances that the body converts to a hormone in 3 steps!

Only about 10% of vitamin D actually comes from food. The rest the body produces itself.

Our body produces a form of Vit D beneath the skin via a chemical reaction from sunlight which is not yet in an activated or bioavailabe form. Still by getting a little outdoor exposure gives us the building blocks.

The liver uses this form to produce another.

Our kidneys can now utilize this to convert to a third form, which is key in controlling blood calcium concentration that affects our immune response.

Low vitamin D can also lead to cardiovascular disease, depression, development of diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. It has also been linked to certain types of cancer.

Here’s the kicker: If supplementing with Vit D, we may still be low as it requires sufficient magnesium levels to be metabolized.

By consuming foods both high in Vit D (salmon, herring, egg yolk, mushrooms) AND Magnesium (nuts, seeds, leafy greens) we effectively improve our levels of Vit. D…..and go outside!!!
